Fresh Food, Strong Communities: Real Food CT Gears Up with New Grant
We’re thrilled to share some exciting news! Real Food CT, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, recently received a $20,000 Food Supply Chain Grant. This crucial funding, alongside the dedication of Senator Tony Hwang, will significantly strengthen our capacity to combat food insecurity in Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties.
Honoring Senator Hwang’s Commitment to Nourishing Communities
Senator Hwang joined Real Food CT Founder Sean Fitzpatrick and our esteemed board members for a celebratory gathering. Senator Hwang’s unwavering support for local food systems and addressing food insecurity truly inspires us.
“Food insecurity and malnutrition are critical issues,” Senator Hwang remarked. “Organizations like Real Food CT are essential in tackling these challenges within our communities. This grant will empower them to bring fresh, farm-to-table produce to even more residents in need.”
Investing in Freshness: A Refrigeration Truck for a Brighter Future
Real Food CT plans to use the grant to acquire a much-needed refrigerated truck. This vital addition will ensure the continued freshness of nutritious food as it travels from local farms and farmer’s markets to soup kitchens, food pantries, and other hunger-relief organizations.
Beyond the Grant: Expanding Our Reach and Impact
This grant builds upon our existing network of giving gardens and partnerships with local farms, allowing us to streamline food distribution and create a more formalized food hub/marketplace. As Sean Fitzpatrick, Real Food CT Founder, stated, “This grant expands our efforts to reach those most vulnerable in our communities.”
Looking Forward: Doubling Down on Expanded Food Security for Seniors
Real Food CT has ambitious goals for the coming year. While connecting hunger-relief organizations with fresh, local produce remains a core focus, we’re particularly committed to significantly reducing food insecurity among fixed-income seniors. Our goal is to double our operational capacity, reach and impact within our local CT communities, targeting areas with people experiencing the highest rates of food insecurity in the state. The RFCT Food Hub expands secure access to diverse, nutrient-dense, locally grown foods.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of Senator Hwang and the CT Department of Agriculture. Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier future where fresh, nutritious food nourishes our communities!
