At Real Food CT, we believe in the power of farmers and the impact of fresh, local, healthy produce to transform communities. Our commitment to providing food for neighbors in need is strengthened by our Young Farmer Internship program, which is gearing up for an exciting new season. Now in its fifth year, this program continues to thrive thanks to the generous support of local grants and ongoing donor contributions. This year, we are thrilled to welcome 10 enthusiastic high school and college-aged students to our farms. These young individuals will be at the heart of our mission, actively participating in planting, harvesting, and donating produce to ensure that nutritious food reaches those who need it most.

Our interns will immerse themselves in a dynamic and hands-on learning environment, gaining practical agricultural skills while making a tangible impact on our community. They will assist in every aspect of farm operations, from the careful planning of crops to the satisfaction of harvesting and distributing fresh produce. This experiential learning not only equips them with essential farming knowledge but also fosters a deep understanding of food systems and the importance of sustainable agriculture.

In addition to their work on our farms, the interns will embark on weekly trips to regional farms to engage in gleaning activities. By collecting surplus produce that would otherwise go to waste, they play a crucial role in reducing farm waste and increasing the availability of fresh food for our neighbors. These gleaning missions are not only a practical solution to food waste but also an inspiring opportunity for our interns to witness the broader agricultural landscape and the collaborative efforts needed to address food insecurity.

As we look forward to the 2024 season, we are inspired by the energy and dedication of our Young Farmer interns. Their contributions are vital to the success of our programs, and we are proud to support their growth as future leaders in sustainable farming. Together, we are cultivating a community where fresh, local produce is accessible to all, and where young people are empowered to make a difference. This enduring program is a testament to the power of community support and the positive change it can bring about.
