With joe pye weed blooming in the fields, mid summer has officially come and gone, and our organization has just reached a major milestone for the season: We’re thrilled to announce that the RFCT crew has distributed over 20,000 pounds of donated, fresh food so far this year!
Thanks to the hard work of the RFCT team, interns, volunteers–and the incredible support of our community, this monumental achievement reflects our commitment to addressing systemic local food systems gaps, and improving access to healthy food options feeding people throughout Connecticut. Each pound of donated produce distributed by the RFCT team supplements a nutritious meal.
Real Food CT’s programs including the Giving Gardens, Farm Gleaning, Food Donation and Distribution services have reached the following mid summer milestones and established goals for the year:
- 20,000 lbs of food donated by local farms and suppliers distributed by directly sourced and delivered by RFCT to over 20 food access organizations and assistance programs
- Managing two farm production sites with Giving Gardens located in Newtown, CT–collectively producing approximately 7,000 pounds of fresh, free food annually
- RFCT 2024 Goal to distribute 40,000 lbs of food, feeding an estimated 10,000 people in Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties
We collaborate with an extensive network of local farms and food access partners to source surplus produce, directly delivering donated food to community food access programs and assistance organizations feeding thousands of individuals across southwest CT.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated volunteers, committed staff, generous donors, local farmers and food access partners who have made this milestone possible.
Together, we are making significant strides towards improving regional food systems for all.
